Exploring Formentera: The Perfect Day Trip from Ibiza

You’ve danced until sunrise. You’ve downed one too many shots of hierbas. You’ve lived your best life at The Oceanbeat Boat Party. You’ve lost at least one flip-flop and possibly a bit of dignity. Classic Ibiza, right?

Now it’s time to hit pause.

Just 30 minutes away lies Formentera. Ibiza’s effortlessly cool little sister who traded the club wristbands for woven beach bags and sea-salt hair. Think crystal-clear water that looks Photoshopped, soft white sand and beach bars that practically whisper “order another sangria, you deserve it”.

Formentera isn’t about flashing lights or pounding bass. It’s about lazy lunches, turquoise waves and resetting your body before the next round of island madness. So if you’re craving a day of pure chill between boat parties and club nights, this tiny slice of paradise is your golden ticket.

Getting There – The Easiest Escape Ever

The best part about Formentera? You don’t need a private yacht or trust fund to get there. A quick 30-minute ferry ride from Ibiza Town or Playa d’en Bossa and boom, you’re in paradise. Ferries run all day, every day, so you can roll out of bed whenever you’re ready.

Grab your tickets in advance, especially in peak season. No one wants to be that poor soul sweating in the queue while everyone else is already sipping mojitos on deck. Oh, and pack light. Flip-flops, sunnies and swimwear are all you really need.

Beaches You’ll Brag About

Formentera’s beaches look like they’ve been stolen straight off a screensaver. You’ll spend half the day wondering if you accidentally woke up in the Caribbean.

Start with Ses Illetes, the island’s showstopper. This stretch of powdery white sand and blindingly blue water is so stunning it makes your Insta filter redundant. It’s also where you’ll find a few boujee beach bars and yachts bobbing offshore. Perfect for pretending you’re in a music video.

If you want something a bit more low-key, head to Cala Saona. The water’s ridiculously clear, the atmosphere’s relaxed and it’s ideal for a lazy swim before grabbing a cold beer at the nearby chiringuito.

Then there’s Playa de Migjorn, a long, sweeping beach made for wandering barefoot and discovering tucked-away bars. Order a mojito, flop into a sun lounger and let the sound of the waves cure whatever chaos Ibiza left in your brain.

Basically, there’s no bad beach here, just varying levels of “how smug will I look in this photo?”

Food, Drinks & Lazy Lunch Spots

Formentera nails that “long lunch that accidentally turns into sunset drinks”. Start at Beso Beach, the island’s most famous spot for seafood, cocktails and spontaneous dancing on tables. Their motto literally means “kiss the sand” and after a few glasses of rosé, you probably will.

If you want something a touch more chilled, Juan y Andrea is your go-to. Right on Ses Illetes, this family-run gem has been serving seafood since the 70s. Think grilled prawns, sea breeze, and the occasional celeb sighting.

For a cheaper (but still delicious) fix, wander inland for local favourites serving paella and sangria that could knock you sideways. Wherever you end up, balance your cocktails with carbs. Formentera may be relaxed, but those sun-soaked vinos still sneak up fast.

Exploring the Island (If You Can Be Bothered)

If you can peel yourself off the beach (no judgement if you can’t), Formentera’s tiny size makes it perfect for a bit of lazy exploring.

Rent a scooter or bike. It’s cheap, easy and the wind-in-your-hair feeling is unbeatable. Cruise through sleepy villages, past cactus-lined roads, and pull over whenever something catches your eye.

Make your way up to La Mola Lighthouse, perched dramatically on the cliffs. It’s the kind of view that makes you go quiet for a sec, or at least pause your Insta story. On Wednesdays and Sundays, there’s also a cute little hippie market nearby where you can grab handmade jewellery and locally made bits.

Or don’t move at all. Stay horizontal, order another drink, and call it a cultural experience in relaxation. Either way, you’re doing Formentera right.

Back to Ibiza (Before Round Two)

As the sun starts to dip, grab the ferry back to Ibiza and watch the sky do its thing. Pinks, golds and purples melting into the Med. It’s the perfect main character moment before diving back into the madness.

You’ll dock feeling refreshed, tanned and dangerously optimistic about doing it all over again tonight. Maybe it’s the sea air. Maybe it’s the mojitos. Either way, Formentera works like a hangover reset button, and you’ll need it for what’s next.

If you’re not ready to call it a night (who are we kidding?), line up an Ibiza boat party for the next day. Trust us, there’s no better way to keep the island buzz alive!

The Perfect Combo

Ibiza and Formentera are basically the ultimate duo. Chaos and calm. Hangover and healing. Glitter and saltwater. You rage one day, you recover the next, and somehow it all balances out.

The perfect day trip? Absolutely. The perfect life? Probably pretty close. So grab your sunnies, your mates, your ferry ticket, and let Formentera show you what bliss looks like between the parties.
