Barcelona Hen Do: The Ultimate Checklist (And How Not To Forget the Bride)

Sunshine. Sangria. Sandy toes. A dozen of your loudest mates wearing matching sashes, sipping cocktails on a rooftop and trying not to lose the bride before midnight. That, in a nutshell, is a Barcelona hen do done right.

If you’ve been tasked with organising it, don’t panic. Sure, it can feel like herding cats with a prosecco problem, but this city makes it easy. Between the beaches, the bars, the boat parties and the tapas, Barcelona has everything you need for a weekend to remember (or at least to piece together via the group chat the next day).

Why Choose Barcelona?

Barcelona isn’t like any other city. Sunshine, sangria, beaches, bars, and more tapas than you can shake a novelty straw at. Whether your group is here for cocktails by the sea, a bit of culture between the chaos, or a proper knees-up that goes on until sunrise, this city has you covered.

The Beaches

This is what sells Barcelona instantly. You don’t have to choose between a city break and a beach holiday because here, you get both.

Barceloneta Beach is the most famous stretch. Lively, buzzing and perfect for people-watching with a jug of sangria. The sand gets packed on sunny afternoons, but that’s part of the experience. You’ll find beach bars (or chiringuitos) lining the promenade, so you’re never far from your next drink or snack.

If you fancy something a bit more chilled, head to Bogatell Beach. It’s a bit further along the coast, less touristy, and perfect if the bride needs to lie flat and recover from last night.

The Food & Drink

If you’re not here for the food and drink, you’re doing Barcelona wrong. This city lives for long, lazy meals shared with friends, washed down with jugs of sangria or bottles of cava. Perfect for a hen do.

Start with the basics. Tapas. Spain’s clever way of letting you nibble, chat, drink, and pretend you’re being civilised even as the table descends into chaos. A few local must-tries:

  • Pan con tomate – Bread rubbed with tomato, olive oil, and salt. So simple it shouldn’t work. But it does. Brilliantly.
  • Patatas bravas – Fried potatoes with a spicy tomato sauce and aioli. Mandatory hangover cure.
  • Pulpo a la gallega – Tender octopus sprinkled with paprika and olive oil.
  • Gambas al ajillo – Prawns sizzling in garlicky olive oil.
  • Jamón ibérico – Thin, salty slices of cured ham that go down far too easily.

If you’re after a proper sit-down meal with a buzzing atmosphere, book a table at Bar Cañete in the Gothic Quarter. It’s lively, authentic, and the staff keep the wine flowing.

For something a bit trendier, Tapeo in El Born serves creative takes on traditional dishes, perfect if your group is feeling a bit foodie.

And if you want a more casual vibe (or you’re between bars), pop into Quimet & Quimet. It’s tiny and standing-room only, but the montaditos (little open-faced sandwiches) and homemade vermouth are excellent.

If you fancy something sweet after all that, grab a plate of churros with thick hot chocolate from Granja Dulcinea, a Barcelona institution tucked down a quiet lane.

Oh, and don’t skip the drinks that go with all this. Try a glass (or bottle, no judgement) of cava, Spain’s answer to champagne. Or a tinto de verano, basically sangria’s lighter, cheekier cousin. Perfect if you’re pacing yourself before round two later.

Daytime Activities

Sure, the nights in Barcelona are legendary, but the days are just as good. When you’re not flopped on the beach recovering from last night’s antics, there’s plenty to keep the group entertained.

Booze Cruise Barcelona

group-of-friends-on-the-barcelona-boat-party

This is hands down one of the best activities for a hen group. The Booze Cruise Barcelona is basically a floating party with incredible views of the city. Expect live DJs, unlimited drinks (within reason, no falling overboard please), dancing, and plenty of laughs. It’s the perfect mix of sun, sea, and silliness.

Shopping in El Born & Passeig de Gràcia

Perfect for when the group “just needs to pop into a few shops” and somehow two hours vanish. El Born is full of quirky boutiques and unique finds. Passeig de Gràcia is where you’ll find the designer shops, perfect for window shopping or blowing your budget in one go.

Hammam Session

For something more chilled (and to stop your body threatening to mutiny), book a session at AIRE Ancient Baths. It’s not just a spa, it’s a proper hammam experience. Warm candlelit pools of varying temperatures, hot stone rooms that steam the sins out of you, icy plunge pools for the brave, and salt baths that let you float like a blissed-out starfish. You’ll sweat out the cocktails, relax those dancing muscles, and emerge looking and feeling a bit more human. Perfect for a little pampering before round two begins.

Wander & Explore

Take a stroll through the Gothic Quarter’s winding streets or climb up to Park Güell for some Gaudí magic and unbeatable photo opportunities. And if you can handle the walk, head up to Bunkers del Carmel for panoramic views of the city.

The Nightlife

Here’s where Barcelona really shows off. The city doesn’t even think about going out until 11pm, so pace yourselves.

Start your evening at a rooftop bar while everyone’s still fresh enough for photos. Sky Bar has knockout views of the Gothic Quarter, while 1881 per Sagardi looks straight out over the marina. Both are ideal for clinking glasses and pretending you’re classy before it all goes downhill.

Then head into El Born or the Gothic Quarter to bar-hop. You’ll find wine bars, speakeasies, dive bars and places that haven’t changed since the 1800s (but somehow still have better cocktails than anywhere back home). Just wander and stop wherever the music or the smell of gin feels right.

If you’re feeling fancy (or just fancy a proper dance) head down to Port Olímpic, home to the iconic beach clubs. Pacha and Opium are the big names, both serving thumping beats, beachside vibes, and plenty of room to throw your best moves. Expect DJs, flashing lights and the odd questionable dance circle.

What to Book Before You Go

If you think you can just rock up with twelve hens and no plan, you’re braver than most. To avoid last-minute stress and disappointed faces, here’s what to get sorted before you even leave home.

Flights & Accommodation

Book flights early to snag the best prices and try flying midweek if you can. For accommodation, go for an Airbnb if you want to keep everyone together, or pick a party-friendly hotel near the beach or in the Gothic Quarter so you’re close to the action.

Booze Cruise Barcelona

This is a must. A boat party is the perfect daytime activity to keep the bride happy and the group buzzing. Book it online in advance to make sure you get a spot, especially if you’re coming at the weekend. Big groups can get a cheeky discount too!

Dinner Reservations

Don’t leave it to chance. Book a table at one of the tapas spots we mentioned earlier or a beachside restaurant so you’re not wandering around hangry.

Club Tickets or Tables

If you’re planning to hit Pacha or Opium and fancy skipping the queues, it’s worth booking entry or a table ahead of time.

What to Pack

Packing for a hen is about being ready for anything Barcelona throws at you.

  • Matching outfits, sashes, tiaras, novelty straws
  • Swimwear for the beach and something glam for the clubs
  • Comfy but cute shoes for navigating those cobbles
  • Sunglasses, sun cream, aftersun

5 Top Tips for a Stress-Free Hen Do

  1. Collect everyone’s money before you even get on the plane.
  2. Don’t try to cram too much in. Leave space for naps and spontaneous bad decisions.
  3. Assign a “bride-sitter” every night to make sure she doesn’t wander off or marry a stranger.
  4. Don’t panic if things don’t go to plan. You’re in Barcelona. The plan is chaos.
  5. Remember to actually enjoy yourself — you’ve earned it.

Go Forth

Barcelona has it all. Beaches. Bars. Booze cruises. More cava than you can shake a sparkly handbag at.

Go forth, get merry (but not missing), and make it one for the books.
